PRAENORICA FOLIA HISTORICO-NATURALIA VIII 2005 TOVÁBBI FORRÁSOK SZABÓ IMRE SZOMBATHELYI BOTANIKUS TANÁR MUNKÁSSÁGÁNAK ISMERETÉHEZ BALOGH Lajos 1 Further sources on the work of the Szombathely botanist and teacher Imre Szabó — Details of the biography and botanical works of the Szombathely-born Imre SZABÓ (1876-1929), who taught natural history at the gymnasium (academically oriented secondary school) were published in the Savaria yearbook by Ernő HORVÁTH in 1966. SZABÓ, who taught in Szeged (1901-14), Trerosen (Irénéin, 1914-19), Székesfehérvár (1919-20) and Szombathely (1920-29) was in touch with several Hungarian botanists of the period and contributed botanical records to the literature on botany. This communication publishes in full several noteworthy gymnasium studies that have not appeared before or only in fragmentary form. The first two are to do with botany, the third a travelogue, and the fourth to do with social anthropology: Flora of Szombathely and its environs; Specialities of the [serpentine] flora of the Borostyánkő Hills; The Krivan: a description of a journey (Tatra); Peasant wedding: a genre scene. Also transcribed are some recently found letters that Szabó addressed to the botanists Antal WAISBECKER of Kőszeg and Gyula GÁYER of Szombathely. BEVEZETÉS Négy évtizeddel ezelőtt, HORVÁTH Ernő (1929-1990), a szombathelyi Savaria Múzeum természettudományi osztályának vezetője tollából látott napvilágot az a botanikai tudománytörténeti tárgyú tanulmány (HORVÁTH 1966), amely SZABÓ Imre életrajzi adatait és botanikai munkásságát ismertette. Szabó Imre (1876-1929) Szombathelyen született, elemi és középiskolai tanulmányait itt, az egyetemet Budapesten végezte. Teológiát is hallgatott, majd földrajz-természetrajz szakos középiskolai tanári diplomát szerzett. Botanikatanára DEGEN Árpád volt, akinek később növénygyűjteményét is adományozta (HORVÁTH 1966); más részét a szegedi állami főreáliskolának, míg ásványgyűjteményét a szombathelyi állami leánylíceumnak ajándékozta (GÁYER 1929).
