Attila {Dr. biol.f The memory of Andreas Beythe (1564-1599) in the history of Hungarian life sciences. — Hungarian scientific botany started with the first printed botanical lecture and the first medical text (SYLVESTER, 1536-1539, 1541) printed in Sárvár, continued with the first Hungarian Herbal written by a former Sárvár student (MELIUS, 1578) and the six volumes of the first Hungarian Medical Monograph written in Gyulafehérvár by Gy. LENCSÉS (1530-1593) also linked to the Sárvár scbPoWStephanus and Andreas BEYTHE (father and son) belonged to the same scientific community. The father became later coworker of the first Pan-European botanist Carolus CLUSIUS during his Pannonian period editing jointly the first independent ethnobotanical regional monographbased on field collections (CLUSIUS and BEYTHE, 1583). The son published in 1595 in Németújvár, now Güssing, Austria, the second Hungarian Herbal, an enlarged and rewritten version of the first Hungarian Herbarium This paper, as well as the whole commemoration of Andreas BEYTHE (1564-1599?) is dedicated to the reconsideration of the merits of the last 16* century Hungarian Herbalist. (BEYTHE István, 1583, Németújvár) BEYTHE András Sárvárott született és botanikai érdeklődését, tudományos munkásságát születési helyinek szellemisége határozta meg. Az az örökség, melyet önkényesen,^ a magyar XVI. század köiijjményeit tekintve talán nem alaptalanul, Sárvári Örvosbotanikai Iskolának nevezhetünk. Ennek az iskolának szellemi vezére, SYLVESTER János volt.
