the beginning of the 14th century onwards. There are not many missing from the list of the vicecomes either. This office was created sometimes between 1306 and 1314 as the curialis comes function of the so called royal country was altered. The change from the royal to the noble county can be seen as a result of this and the appearance of the deputy sheriffs office. Of course, there are many more gaps in the list of the latter, approximately 1/4 of the 400 deputy sheriffs of medieval Tolna county are identified. They were chosen, with no exception, from amongst the county small nobility. The same group supplied the big private estate administrators, the IandlordsA familiáris who performed military duties and the occasional legal representatives, the so called homo regius, persons who carried out inquiries on royal order. The abstracts are instructive primarily for those interested in local and regional history - the specifying the place of settlements that disappeared since then is to help them - but it might be useful for national history as well. There are a few cases of special significance and interest, for instance, unknown marketplaces, etc. The merits and faults of this publication could be shown by contrast with other similar publications on other counties . So far, however, not any such abstract-collection has appeared. Translated by Orsolya Szakály
