Gróh Dániel: A Visegrád–lepencei római őrtorony bejáratának átépítése

Dániel Gróh The transformation of the entrance of watchtower at Visegrád-lepence The construction works of highway no. 11 in the early 1980s revealed and unfortunately partly destroyed the ruins of Roman watchtower on the Danube side of the road, opposite the entrance of the Visegrádlepence thermal baths 45 km to the West from Budapest. The entrance of the burgus (a 18,3 x 18,3 m rectangle with walls 170 cm thick) was on the north-western side, facing the Danube. In front of the entrance, approximately 2 meters from the walls to the Danube a stone plaque was found saying the tower was built in 371 AC. Around the stone plaque in the debris three heads of statues were also uncovered. According to the evidence of marks of wear and tear on the threshold stone, the stone plaque must have been inserted in the gate that had been narrowed down. We will make an attempt to reconstruct the possible arrangement of the stone plaque and the heads based on the observations during our excavation. 19
