Mark B. Shchukin: Forgotten Bastarnae
The Zubra Group existed until the early 3 RD c. A.D. at Volhynia and until the late 3 RD c. in the Upper Dniester region (KOZAK 1992, ris. 38). From Volhynia they were ousted by the movement of the representatives of the Wielbark Culture usually associated with the Goths who moved from the Baltic coast to the Black Sea littoral in the late 2 ND - early 3 RD c. A.D. It seems very reasonable to identify the Zubra Group with the latest Bastarnae. In any event, I do not know of any other archaeological unit that corresponds better with the latest Bastarnae, although the problem is far from being resolved completely. As for the correlation of the Zubra Group with Cherniakhov sites of the Cherepin-Ripnev type, the relation of the Bastarnae and Venedi and the participation of both in the process of Slavic ethnogenesis, these are subjects for another paper.
