Eduard Krekovic: Roman fibulas in Slovakia

the imported fibulas in Slovakia come from three cemeteries situated in the centre of the Vannius Kingdom: Abraham, Kostolná and Sládkovicovo. In these cemeteries there are large numbers of imported goods, mainly from the 1 st c. AD. Approximately one half of the total of fibulas found here are of Roman provenance (50.9%). Within particular cemeteries the proportions were the following: total brooches Roman brooches % Abraham 122 58 47.5 Kostolná 55 30 54.5 Sládkovicovo 67 34 50.7 To summarise, it can be said that the majority of the imported fibulas in Slovakia are from the 1 st c. A.D. Thereafter their presence begins to decrease, which can also be explained by improving craft techniques among barbarian producers increasingly able to satisfy the demand for fibulas. This is why we find Roman products infrequently after the Marcomannic Wars. Reference BÖHME 1972 A. Böhme: Die Fibeln der Kastelle Saalburg und Zugmantel. SJ 29, 1972, 5-112. DROBERJAR 1997 E.
