More and more brass became necessary for producing artillery ammunition which could be provided only by confiscating brass objects for war needs. Surrendered brass mortars were replaced by cast-iron and china war or “emergency” mortars. The author reviews the war mortars from his collection. Beside a detailed description of 24 cast-iron and 7 china mortars he also displays the main types. On some of the pieces the year is indicated, on some others beside the year we find Hungarian, German and Latin text, more rarely some depiction, and there are pieces with only motive without the indication of the year. At the moment we do not know those Hungarian and foreign iron-foundries and china factories where war mortars were produced. Neither do we know the quantity of mortars, but their is age can be precisely determined from the indication of years that is met in most of the cases. The first pieces must have been produced in 1915. Today these objects, as memories of the First World War, belong to precious treasures of public and private collections.
