Stojanow Stojanow Battle baptism of the 2nd Class (of Nyíregyháza) of the Kassa 5th Honvéd Hussar Regiment on August 15th, 1914 In 2009 László Máriássy, a former Hussar officer from Nyíregyháza, the member of the Board of Trustees of the Hungarian Hussar Foundation presented the foundation the First World War memoir of his father, Hussar colonel László Máriássy, the commander of the Crown Guard. This thick manuscript counting 450 pages includes also maps and a number of photographs that follow the history of the 5lh Honvéd (National Defence) Hussar Regiment’s 6th Squadron from the mobilisation to the prison of war, up to July 6th, 1916. First lieutenant Máriássy was the leader of the Is' Platoon of the 6th Squadron. From this vastly document we publish here all the important events from the front life of this regiment, its battle baptism that took place on August 15th, 1914 at Stojanow. The strength of this battle was so outstanding, that later all around Galicia the Cossacks called Hungarian Hussars “red devils”. Cavalry attack in Stojanow took place on the first day of reconnaissance and was successful, so military leadership referred to it as an inspirational example. Due to this cavalry attack the 11th Honvéd Cavalry Division was the only army unit that really reached during reconnaissance to the line where it was originally ordered by the army command-in-chief. However, in the machine war of the Modem Age Hussars became defenceless against firearms of high impact (machine-guns). Victorious or losing cavalry attacks (Stojanow /August 15th/, Vladimir-Volinskij /August 16th/, Gorodok /August 17th/, Satanow /August 18th/, Jaroslawice /August 21st/, Buczacz /August 23rd/, Kamionka-Strumilowa /August 24th/) were only the last glints, episodes of the Hussar bravado. The First World War brought an end to the Hussars, it was the dusk of their glory. János Bene Jósa András Museum H-4401 Nyíregyháza Pf. 57 e-mail: benejan@jam.nyirbone.hu 291
