The seat of the district was in Nyírbátor led by high sheriff Lajos Szilcz. In June 1848, 23 persons volunteered for military service in this agrarian town with population counting 2935. They were conscripted into the 10th Honvéd (“protector of the homeland” = revolutionary soldier) Battalion formed in Debrecen. In August 1848 Szabolcs County organised a volunteer battalion. In the autumn of 1848 this unit was transformed into a regular Honvéd battalion and received number 48, but also kept the name Szabolcs. 15 youngsters from Nyírbátor reported for this unit. This battalion was one of the most courageous troops of the Liberation War. Their banner was awarded with the 3rd class valour award. They laid down their arms in Komárom, and smuggled the banner home to Szabolcs. Now this banner belongs to the most valuable pieces of the Jósa András Museum. In the autumn of 1848 - spring of 1849, after the recruitment laws accepted for better protection of the country, 38 conscripts were drafted partly to the 28th Debrecen Honvéd Battalion, partly to the 43rd Nyíregyháza Honvéd Battalion, but some of them got into Hussar units.
