Adatok az Észak-Tiszántúl ünnepi táplálkozásához bridal dance. Formerly, griddle-cake, bars with poppy and nuts, round cakes, perhaps sponge cakes and cake composed the desserts. Later they were replaced by vanilla rolls, linzer and coconut cubes. The traditional drinks were brandy and wine, later beer was added. When much food remained it was either distributed or a post-wedding feast was organised. The wedding traditions barely change, only the number of the dishes increases. New elements also appear beside the traditional ones. Those who kept vigil beside a dead person and the grave diggers were also offered food. They got bacon, bread, brandy and wine. A funeral feast was organised after the funeral. Meat soup, cabbage and goulash were cooked and pastry was baked. A place was reserved for the dead as well. Keeping vigil and digging graves is out of custom in larger settlements but funeral feasts are organised everywhere. Christmas was celebrated according to religious traditions. The Catholic kept fast on Christmas eve. The dinner consisted of a soup made of dried plums, fish fried in oil, pastry with cabbage, fried mushroom or bobajka. A whole milk-loaf, apples and walnuts were placed on the table. The Lutherans did not eat fish on this occasion. The Calvinists had meat soup and stuffed cabbage for dinner. On the first day of Christmas, a real feast menu was served everywhere. On Good Friday, both the Catholic and the Lutherans kept fast. On the first day of Easter, the Catholic had the food consecrated: boiled eggs, ham, meat, stuffed hen, sausages, milk-loaf, horseradish, salt, the Greek Catholic added matzo and yellow curd. The latter one is a local characteristic. This day only the consecrated foot was eaten. On Easter Monday, the "sprinklers" were given red eggs, cakes and drinks. Many of the elderly people have preserved the traditions and try to pass them over to the younger generations. Magdolna D.
