After a short upswing, Nyíregyháza had to face numerous unsolved problems from 1927. One of them, the most important one, was the increasing unemployment and impoverishment. Neither private nor public constructions, large investments took place. It was difficult to create opportunities for jobs in the bottle-neck industry of Nyíregyháza, which meant first of all building industry and processing industry. Together with the unemployed heads of families, the number the people who remained unprovided for increased and masses of peasants of farmsteads who became impoverished because of the declining marketing possibilities joined them. The leaders of the town sought a way out from this situation by relief work with state aid and the extension of various relief operations. The building of the airport, the cleaning and “re-organisation” of the Sóstó lake and then the construction of the nationally famous open-air cold pool were accomplished in the early 1930’s with relief work, and relief workers - mostly craftspeople - worked in a few investments of the treasury and the town especially in the construction of the Damjanich barracks. Within relief operations, free dinners, food and fuel were distributed among the distressed people and families. Nevertheless, relief work could not solve the problem. It mostly meant only temporary, short-term jobs. The town of Nyíregyháza finally found the way out of the crisis in the economic boom that started in the late 1930’s.
