Történelem, helytörténet - Néző István: Egy humanista főpap. Várday Ferenc élete és tevékenysége
Néző István are associated mainly with this function. He continued to build his Italian relations also in Gyulafehérvár, and supported Hungarian profane and clerical officials to continue their studies abroad too. In order to make the bishop seat and his own authority more respectable Várday invited humanist scholars, made new acquaintances. His protégés in return paid with different kinds of works of art. Ferenc Várday made arrangements to leave an imperishable memory of his activities and that of the bishop’s power. This memory was represented in the St.Ann chapel. Special literature associated the humanistic character of the bishop’s activity with this fact. In the present study we succeeded in introducing several aspects, based on which we are entitled to say that Ferenc Várday belonged to significant personalities of the Hungarian humanism and Renaissance. Until now the bishop was famous for his role played in the suppression of the Dósa Peasant War. We believe that starting from now Várday’s name will be associated also with his other deeds.
