Hardwood gallery forests of the floodplains of the Drava river in Somogy, SW. Hungary BALÁZS KEVEY In this paper, hardwood gallery forests (Fraxino pannonicae-Ulmetum) occurring along the Dráva River in Somogy county are characterized using 50 phytosociological records. This association occupies habitats in the higher river floodplain influenced by groundwater. In the understorey, submontane species (Fagetalia) are frequent, which makes this association similar to the lowland oak-hornbeam forests (Circaeo-Carpinetum). Due to the presence of some species with submediterranean distribution, it also is similar to the hardwood gallery forests occurring on sandy soil in the neighbouring Belső Somogy (Knautio drymeiae-Ulmetum). By its overall species composition this association is mostly related to the hardwood gallery forests of the plains, whose distribution extends to this part of the river valley.
