419 Small mammal fauna of the region between Varászló, Somogysárd, Iharos and Csököly (county Somogy, Hungary), based on barn owl Tyto alba (Scopoli, 1769) pellet analysis JENŐ J. PURGER Barn owl pellets were collected in county Somogy (investigated area: XM54, XM63, XM74, XM73, XM84, XM83, XM94 and XM93 UTM grids) between 1995 and 2002, from 23 localities. In a total of 1806 barn owl pellets there were 5780 prey remnants (3.2 was the prey per pellet ratio). Small mammals were dominating (98.2%). Remnants of birds, amphibians, snails and insects consisted 1.8% of total prey. Mammal prey consisted of Soricidae (Sorex araneus, Sorex minutus, Neomys anomalus, Neomys fodiens, Crocidura leucodon, Crocidura suaveolens) 44.95%, Talpidae (Talpa europaea) 0.03%, Vespertilionidae (Eptesicus serotinus) 0.11%, Arvicolidae (Clethrionomys glareolus, Arvicola terrestris, Microtus agrestis, Microtus arvalis, Microtus subterraneus) 32.16%, Muridae (Micromys minutus, Apodemus agrárius, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus sylvaticus, Rattus norvegicus, Mus musculus, Mus spicilegus and specimens belonging to genus Apodemus, Rattus and Mus) 22.59%, Gliridae (Muscardinus avellanarius) 0.14%, and Mustelidae (Mustela nivalis) 0.02%.
