The demographic situation of Somogy county in the years during the turn of the Millennium GÁBOR KURUCZ Based on the above arguments we can say that the demographic situation of the county shows a varied picture on the turn of the Millennium. In many cases, the figures show great resemblance to the regional and national rates. The gender rate of women per 1000 men, just as well the rough divorce rate equals to the national data. The live birth rate hardly differs from the national average. Many of these features can be explained by the characteristics of the county. The population tends to concentrate along the main roads running through passable valleys, while the embanked topographical forms embraced by hills are featured by sparse population and settlements with less inhabtants. The ageing of population is accelerated in these smaller settlements. The demographic situation in the south of Lake Balaton, where the tourism plays a significant role, seems to be better than the average of the county. Certain features are due to the high rate of gypsy population. Besides the rapid ageing of small villages, the high death rate of the county is alarming, as well as the declining tendency of life expectation and the high rate of abortions. Notwithstanding, we also ought to notice the favourable tendencies (a reduction in infant mortality, positive changes in migration) that effect the future population-geography situation, and can also be decisive for the economical progress.
