World War. In these volumes the authors outlined the global processes of emigration. They however lacked the demonstration of individual lives, joys and tragedies, which were experienced by this generation. Those documents were missing from which the „history" of individual people could be interpreted. We consider those private letters written by the emigrates to their loved ones and of course the reply letters as well. We cannot use the method of oral history writing in this theme, as the generation is not living any more. They carried the messages worth preserving with them into the grave, into the cemeteries burying their secrets. The author however proved that the position of the researcher is not hopeless, as in the archives, and among the family documents, in old kit bags and in hidden nooks of flats valuable documents are perishing. We found the "American" documents of a peasant family from Vors in this way, and from them we can get a glimpse into the most hidden secrets of the family, and into their everyday life. Through the legacy documents of J. Lörincz Szabó we can become acquainted with the activity of the First Hungarian Workers' Sick Relief Association of Monesseni founded by Pennsylvanián emigrants, the corresponding letters with the family in Hungary, as well as the diary memoranda of J. Through the letters we gain insight into the intimate sphere of a peasant family. We can learn about their problems, joys and sorrows, frailty and virtues. Their human habits are outlined and that features which they are ashamed of to show to others. We can also learn about, how they observed their closer environment, the village where they lived. They give an account about the more important occasions of the family, about the relatives, friends, and village acquaintances etc. We get a few important tacts about nation-wide events, about the political situation, the emigration and the army among others. From the diary we can become acquainted with the life circumstances of the emigrants, the wage possibilities, and above all with the thoughts connected to America, and the homeland. As we can see the major part of the emigrants adapted himself to the unusual circumstances and endured the hardships of industrial work in the hope of higher salaries. Undoubtedly America has changed them; they became more educated, demanding and conscious. Whether happier as well is difficult to answer, as many were crippled for a lifetime, families were separated as becomes evident from the study.
