Kunffy Lajos: Visszaemlékezéseim, 2006
couple also protected Lajos and his family. Ever grateful for these human kindnesses, which were not without grave risks to their dispensers, the de Kunffys survived the last months of the horrors of World War II in Budapest. Having returned to their home in Somogytur after the Soviet occupation, their lives remained hazardous. I have a pencil-drawn self-portrait of Lajos with his head bandaged, with the following inscription: „Le lendemain d'une attaque russe le 1er mai 1946 ou 5eme de l'apres midi." The de Kunffy's estates, homes, lands and apartments were all confiscated by the Communists, as usual. They were left to live in their dignified but modest home in Somogytur as privileged, prominent artists because they were known in the West and befriended internationally. Therefore their humane life style of „gracious poverty" was on display to show an appreciation of the arts by „cultured" Marxist regimes. Neither Lajos, nor the once glamorous Ella had ever complained. They were too elegant to notice the inconveniences. Ady Endre dedikált kötete Kunffyéknak 1904. 267
