Two propositions can be considered: on the one hand Tulln's hoard was hidden later than Smyrna's hoard and Singidunum's hoard therefore, the coins of Tulln had been circulated for a longer time and had worn away more intensively. The coins of Tulln's hoard would be more corroded on the other hand and therefore more material could be transported from their surface during cleaning. At the same time the coins of the other two hoards would have to be cleaned less rigorously. The difference of the average mass of différent groups can be seen in the 5 th column of the tables. The sum of the 5th columns is given as the weighted arithmetic mean calculated as follows: S = n r xi • n 2 • x 2 » n 3 . x 3 + n 4 . x 4 ^ nj + n 2 + n 3 + n 4 where n is the number of coins. These data can be seen in Fig. 4 and in the 6th column of Table 4. This figure contains data of nearly 5000 antoniniani. The data of Dorchester's and Plevna's hoards are summarized in Tables 5 and 6.
