Analysis - HEGEDŰS Zoltán: Metallography cal testing of iron artifacts from the iron smelter finding of Imola

In this respect a number of possibilities may be supposed: 1. The edge of the tool became notched and to enable it to be repaired the end to be repaired had to be heated. 2. A hot material was cut with the tool (slag) and it softened as a result of this. 3. The edge segment of the tool was softened with the intention of decreasing its fragility . 4. Judging from our present technical knowledge, it is most improbable that only the axe handle should have been hardened, nor is it understood at present the purpose for which this was done.
