Glass finds from a 12th-13th century settlement (Faluhely, Bónum, Orosháza, Hungary) ISTVÁN FÓRIZS - ZOLTÁN RÓZSA - EDIT MESTER - MÁTÉ SZABÓ - MÁRIA TÓTH An Árpádian Period settlement was unearthed near Orosháza (Hungary) supposedly with Islamic inhabitants dealing with money exchange in the 12th—13th century. Among bone, ceramic and metal objects two fragments of glass vessels have been found. The archaeometric investigations revealed the fairly close chemical compositions and identical texture of the two fragments indicating the possibility they were parts of one vessel or they were made in the same workshop. The chemistry clearly shows soda plant ash type glass which was typical for both the Islamic and Venetian glasses. The form of one of the fragments (biconical, or bottle with body-tubular ring) matches a well-known Venetian vessel type, but it was known in the Islamic world as well. The chemical composition of our glass fragments fits well both the contemporary Islamic glass and the high quality (uncoloured) Venetian glass as well. In this period of time Venetian glassmakers used Levantine raw glass for the higher quality glass products. After the Hungarian-Venetian trade agreement in 1217 Venetian made glass objects appeared in Hungary at several places. So one explanation for the origin of the studied glass fragments can be that they were made in the Venetian glassmaking centre from Levantine raw glass, but the Islamic provenience cannot be excluded.
