The flora, vegetation and fauna of the Villány Hills, South Hungary. Preface to the volume. Ákos UHERKOVICH 25 years ago a joined research work was launched to find out about the flora and fauna of the Bares Landscape Protection Area, i. e. Bares Juniper Woodland. That work resulted in 64 papers by 40 authors, spreading over 700 pages in 4 volumes (1978-1985). Later further landscape protection areas in South Transdanubia and the Duna-Dráva National Park were examined by us resulting also in a rich knowledge and further four volumes of papers about the results of those nature protection areas. Recent studies were carried out as part of a research project competition announced by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The field works were carried out in the Villány Hills, the southernmost, low hilly region of Hungary. Earlier results (collections, manuscripts, literature) were also taken into consideration in most cases. In this volume 27 authors publish 31 papers about their results in botany and zoology, presenting about 5000 taxa. Several taxa occur only here in Hungary and this is the first time their occurrence is published. The most valuable area is the Szársomlyó Hill, nevertheless there are very interesting habitats in the other part of the Villány Hills too, which are also to be protected.
