MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 No tubercles on transverse carina of clypeus. Mandibles tridentate (Fig. 87), reddish brown toward apex. Flagellomere 1 about 2x as long as 2. Anterior part of mesosoma wider than propodeum. Mesosoma finely punctate, rusty brown; other parts of body black. Metasomal tergites 1-3 with broad pale band of pubescence. Band of tergite 1 not interrupted; bands of 2 and 3 widely interrupted at middle.Head and mesosoma with dense woolly black pubescence. Large species (Fig. 165). 11-14 mm. Widely distributed palaearctic species, which is quite common in mountainous areas. It is very rare in Hungary; the MTM had only a single specimen caught more than 100 years ago in Budapest. Recent discoveries of new localities confirmed the presence of this species in this country, however (Fig. 10). Females are known from four locations, although no male specimen has so far been collected in Hungary. Known period of collection: 8. VI-17. VIII. Distribution: Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the Middle and Near East (Georgia, Syria). Mutilla marginata BAER, 1848 6 (1) Winged forms, males. 7 (8) Flagellomeres rusty brown. Clypeus convex, with two denticles on anterior margin. Mandibles tridentate, teeth obtuse. No medial longitudinal carina on metasomal tergite 7. Head, antennae, clypeus, prothorax, mesothorax and scutellum rusty brown. Other parts of mesosoma dark chestnut brown, tegulae brownish red. Legs chestnut brown, tarsi much lighter, metasoma dark chestnut brown. Head with sparse brown setae, upper part of mesosoma with sparse, dark setae, legs, sides of mesosoma and middle of metasoma with sparse pale setae. Posterior margin of tergite 1 with band of whitish setae, band of setae on tergites 2 and 3 excised in hemispherical shape in middle (but not entirely interrupted), no bands of setae on other tergites. Large species. 10-15 mm. [Mutilla quinquemaculata CYRILLO, 1787] 8 (7) Flagellomeres black. 9 (10) Middle of mesosoma rusty red. Setae on legs black. Anterior margin of clypeus excised. Mandibles tridentate, widening toward apex reddish brown; apical tooth pointed, two inner teeth smaller and obtuse (Fig. 86). Tegulae punctate. Metasomal tergite 7 with clearly visible longitudinal flat wrinkles. Body, antennae and legs black, but mesonotum, scutellum and propodeum rusty brown. Whole body, pale patterns apart, and legs covered by sparse erect black setae. Tergites 1-3 with band of pale setae at posterior margin, band on tergite 1 entire, band on tergites 2 and 3 interrupted in middle. Large species (Fig. 162). 11-17 mm. Mutilla europaea LINNAEUS, 1758 10 (9) Mesosoma uniformly black. Setae on legs dense, whitish. Anterior margin of clypeus notched. Mandible tridentate, widening toward apex, somewhat reddish brown. Apical tooth narrow, pointed, next inner tooth smaller and obtuse, third tooth large and pointed (Fig. 88). Metasomal tergites 1-3 with band of dirty white setae.
