Identification keys

MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 which may produce triangularly forward. Tergite 3 usually entirely covered by pale pubescence. Male head barely wider than mesosoma. Ocelli may be small or large. Clypeus may be flat or convex, with two tooth-like tubercles on anterior part. Mandibles bidentate or tridentate, usually with large protrusion on outer side. Flagellomere 1 less than half as long as 2. Metasomal segment 1 usually shorter than or equal to its maximum width. Tergite 2 and sternite 2 with felt lines, the latter shorter (Fig. 74). Wings transpar­ent or quite dark. This speciose genus includes 47 species in Europe. Of them, 7 occur in Hungary. 1 (12) Apterous forms, females. 2 (5) Pygidium triangular, widening basally (1st subgenus: Eremotilla LELEJ, 1985). 3 (4) Tergite 2 with one pale spots of pubescence. Clypeus convex with median transversal carina. Flagellomeres 1-3 about equal in lenght. Mandibles pointed, sometimes with two very small teeth on inner edge under apex. Mesosoma barely longer than its maximum width. Scutellar scale wide, nail-like, clearly visible. Propodeum sloping steeply backward. Pygidium with longitudinal wrinkles nearly up to apex. Head black, antennae reddish brown, darkening toward apex. Mesosoma rusty red. Legs chestnut brown, knees and tarsi lighter. Frons and vertex covered by appressed yellow pubescence not forming distinct spots, and with sparse erect black setae among yellow pubes­cence. Dorsal part of mesosoma covered by sparse appressed golden pubescence, and with erect black setae on anterior part and around scutellar scale. Anterior part of tergite 2 with circular spot of pale pubescence in middle, with two similar spots located on sides, and with band of pale pubescence on posterior margin produced triangularly forward. Tergite 3 covered entirely by pale pubescens. No band of pubescence on other tergites (Fig. 184). 4.5-7 mm. East Mediterranean species, It is reported for the first time from Hungary. A few localities are known (Fig. 22). Known period of collection: 25. VI-26. VIII. Distribution: Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine. Smicromyrme (Eremotilla ) nonveilleri INVREA, 1954 4 (3) Tergite 2 with three pale spots of pubescence. Anterior part of clypeus with transversal carina and tubercle in middle. Flagellomere 1 barely longer than 2. Mandibles pointed (Fig. 116), sometimes with two small teeth on inner edge under apex. Mesosoma sometimes barely longer than its maximum width (form "curtiventris ", Fig. 188). Scutellar scale wide, nail-like, clearly visible. Propodeum sloping steeply backward. Pygidium with longitudinal wrinkles nearly up to apex (Fig. 142). Mesosoma rusty red, nar­row anterior margin darker. Head black, antennae reddish brown, darkening toward apex. Legs chestnut brown, knees and tarsi lighter. Frons and vertex cov­ered by appressed yellow setae not forming distinct spots, with sparse erect black setae among yellow setae. Dorsal part of mesosoma covered by sparse appressed golden setae, anterior part of mesosoma and around scutellar scale with erect black setae. Anterior part of tergite 2 with circular spot of pale setae in middle, with two similar spots located on sides, and with band of pale pubescence on posterior margin produced triangularly forward. Tergite 3 covered entirely by pale pubescens. No band of pubescence on other tergites (Figs 187-188). 5-8 mm.
