MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 weak band on posterior margin of sternites. Band of pale setae present on posterior margin of tergites 1 and 2, pale setae covering entire surface of tergite 3. Band of pubescence on tergite 2 in middle slightly produced forward. Wings „smoky" brown, barely transparent (Fig. 169). 8-16 mm. Ronisia brutia (PETAGNA, 1787) Tropidotilla BISCHOFF, 1920 Female head as wide as or wider than mesosoma. Flagellomere 1 about 1.5x longer than 2. Scutellar scale absent, pygidium present. Mesosomal tergites 1-5 with narrow band of pale setae. Male ocelli small., Flagellomere 1 slightly shorter than 2. Hypopygium with medial longitudinal carina. Wings conspicuously dark, „smoky". Metasomal segment 2 rusty red. The genus includes 5 species in Europe. One occurs in Hungary. 1 (2) Apterous forms, females. Head about 1.1-1.2* wider than mesosoma. Temples broadening posteriorly. Clypeus transversely arched, with obtuse tubercle at base. Mandibles long, pointed, black toward apex (Fig. 76). Upper posterior part of propodeum with row of small rod-like projections, middle one the largest. Width of metasomal segment 1 shorter than long, with tooth-like process on underside. Pygidium rounded, apex elongate, surface densely wrinkled. Head black, occasionally with brownish red spot on frons. Flagellomeres brownish red, but lighter toward base. Mesosoma rusty red, sides chestnut brown, occasionally entire mesosoma dark chestnut brown. Legs chestnut brown, tarsi lighter. Frons and vertex with sparse erect dark setae and appressed reddish brown setae. Upper parts of mesosoma with sparse golden appressed setae and with erect black setae, legs with lighter setae. Posterior part of tergites 1-5 with band of pale pubescence, band of tergite 1 frequently interrupted, band of tergite 2 produced triangularly forward in middle (Fig. 167). 10-14 mm. Mediterranean species, which is very rare in Hungary (Fig. 12). Only two female and four male specimens are known. Collection period is not known. Distribution: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and North-Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco), as well as in the Middle and Near East (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Israel). Anterior margin of clypeus with two small tubercles , and with a third posterior tubercle at base. Mandibles long, pointed, unidentate, apex black (Fig. 75). Inner edge of mandibles with wide, low protrusion. Flagellomere 2 about as long as 3, slightly longer than 1. Tegulae large, surpassing suture between mesonotum and scutellum (Fig. 42), outer half smooth and shiny, inner half with small pits. Metasomal sternite 1 with medial
