History of the Symphyta research in the Carpathian Basin

I. Olasz studied the life history of Palaeocimbex quadrimaculatus Müll. (OLASZ 1940). J. Bodor wrote a paper on the Pamphiliidae pests (BODOR 1968). Augustin Kalandra, J. Kaláb, Serhij Kolubajiv, M. Kudela, K. Kolofik, Vladislav Martinék and Jaroslav Kíístek intensively studied the occurrence and control of spruce feeding sawflies in the Moravian part of Carpathians (KALÁB 1935, KOLUBAJIV 1939, 1958, KOLUBAJIV and KALANDRA 1952, KUDELA and KOLOFIK 1955, MARTINÉK 1960, KRÍSTEK 1973, 1974, 1980). Recently Jaroslav Holusa (1970 Frydek-Místek - , forestry entomologist at the Forestry and Game Management Research Institute, Frydek-Mistek) researched the spruce feeding sawflies, especially outbreaks of Pristiphora abietina Christ., in the north east Moravia including Moravskoslezké Beskydy Mts (a part of Carpathians in Czech Rep.). D'Agnolo (former director of the Military Forests in Záhorie SW Slovakia) and Miroslav Capek (1927 Bezdëkov - , associated profesor at Technical Univ. in Zvolen) reported outbreaks of serious sawfly forest pest in Slovakia (D'AGNOLO 1940; CAPEK et al. 1956). Later Julius Jamnicky, Ján Kulfan and Miroslav Uradník studied the sawflies associated with coniferous trees in the mountains of Slovakia (JAMNICKY 1963, 1988, 1990, ÚRADNÍK and KULFAN 2002, ÚRADNÍK 2006). Vladimir Greco and Alojz Blahutiak (1931 VelTcé Záluzie -, former director of the Institute of Entomology and Phytopathology in Ivanka p. Dunaji) studied the ecology and control of the fruit sawflies (Hoplocampa spp) damaging plums in Slovakia (BLAHUTIAK 1991, 1998a, 1998b; GRECO 1966). Pavel Hrubík (1941 Senné near Vellcy Krtis - , professor at the Agricultural University in Nitra) studied the Symphyta pests of urban or park vegetation (HRUBÍK 1988; JUHÁSOVÁ and HRUBÍK 1984) and oaks in Slovakia (HRUBÍK et al., 1995). Interesting faunistic records of several rare species were published in his papers. In Slovakia, J. Matlák, J. Molnár, H. Tichá, H. Vlíková and V. Zacha studied the sawfly pests of orchards and household gardens (MATLÁK 1982, 1983; MOLNÁR 1989; TICHÁ 1970; VLCKOVÁ 1995; ZACHA 1986).
