62 NATURA SOMOGYIENSIS Poplar gallery forests (Senecioni sarracenici-Populetum albae KEVEY in BORHIDI et KEVEY 1996) of Dráva Plain in Baranya county (SW Hungary) BALÁZS KEVEY & VIKTÓRIA TÓTH In this paper, the white poplar gallery forests {Senecioni sarracenici-Populetum albae) occurring sporadically along the left bank of the Dráva River are characterized. The stands of this forest occupy areas that are about 1 metres higher than those covered with black poplar gallery forests (Carduo crispi-Populetum nigrae) and willow gallery forests {Leucojo aestivi-Salicetum albae). They are transitional between these and the hardwood gallery forests {Fraxino pannonicae-Ulmetum) occurring at even higher grounds. The intermediate position of this association in the successional series is attested by its species composition. In its stands, species characteristic of marshes {CyperoPhragmitea s.l.) and softwood gallery forests {Saliceteapurpureae s.l.) are common, but species typical of hardwood gallery forests {Alnion incanae) and mesophilous forests {Fagetalia) also appear. In Central Europe, there are two closely related associations of this forest type. One is the Populetum nigro-albae (Vojvodina, Serbia) with submediteranean character, and the Fraxino-Populetum albae (Upper Austria, Southern Germany) with submontane character.
