Ander Balázs: Adatok az egyházi nagybirtok történetéhez a Barcsi járás horvát falvaiban BALÁZS ANDER DATA TO THE HISTORY OF CHURCH LARGE ESTATE IN THE CROATIAN VILLAGES OF BARCS DISTRICT IN THE TURNING OF 19-20. CENTURY SUMMARY In the history of the previous Bares district (Somogy county, Hungary) the Croatians who were almost one fifth of the whole population played a very important role. The author of this article shows a special part of agricultural and place history of 4 Croatian villages (Lakócsa, Potony, Szentborbás, Tótújfalu). In the turning of the 19-20. century important changes took place in Hungarian agriculture, and it influenced our settlements aswell. In the south-eastern corner of the district these four settlements were in a particularly difficult situation, because the church large estates of the abbacy in Zselicszentjakab occupied the places of these villages, which forced the peasant population to narrow boundaries. As faithful Catholics the Croatians - unlike the Calvinist farmers from that area - didn't want to do anything against the increase of population with the drastical "one child system" they tried to control the population growth with greater amount of migration in social level. But - as the article sheds the light on - the diligent Croatian smallholders could break out of the unfair vicious circle of the large estate system they could intensify their agriculture in gardening or animal husbandry. 99
