PROLOGUE The publication of the Drava Museum - named „Gyökerek" (Roots) - has five issues between 1992 and 1996. In the year of 2003 the publication was completely reformed: it was edited in a longer volume and more various contents. In the last year we decided the annual edition of this publication. The year of 2004 has a great importance for us. On the one hand this year is the 25 th anniversary of our town Bares on the other hand this year is the 25 th birthday of the Drava Museum. We would like to celebrate this beautiful anniversary with this new publication that is why we paid more attention to the raising of the quality of this issue. The volume includes seven essays. The first essay would like to present the 25 years of the town Barcs: L. Berniez's essay makes an attempt to the synthesis of the progress of events since the town's dedication ceremony. The other essays analise the different aspects and the various periods of Bares and the life of its surrounding. J. Botha wrote about the fauna of the river bank of Dráva, M. Rózsás wrote about the everyday' s material culture from the 18 th-19 th centuries. Bares, the agricultural society is the centre of B. Ander' s essay and Bares, the border town is the centre of dr. B. Kéri Nagy' s writing. The archaic regional dance is the matter of the O. Vass's article. A. Mészáros' s essay deals with the last wellmaker master from Bares and presents the short history of the wellmaking craft. At the end of every essay brief English summaries can be read. The English texts are translated by Balázs Ander and lectored by Mrs. Tímea Mészáros. The editor 9
