Schleininger Tamás: Mementó. Kesserű Kálmán a szentendrei járás volt főszolgabírája

TAMÁS SCHLEININGER MEMENTO KÁLMÁN KESSERÜ, THE CHIEF CONSTABLE OF THE SZENTENDRE DISTRICT Kálmán Kesserü was the chief constable of the Szentendre district, the magistrate of 16 villages between 1941-1945. During the wartime years it required a man to fulfil the commitments at this post, and he could meet all the requirements perfectly. In the above-mentioned period the chief constable saved several Jewish families from being deported by giving them permission to move to Budapest. He provided Polish refugees with certificates allowing them to move freely in the whole country and when the German troops occupied Hungary he helped a good many Poles with leaving the country. He could prevent blowing up the post-office of Szentendre and that of the stream-bridge. All these data were revealed from the records of the Documentation Department of the Ferenczy Museum. The documents, certificates and affidavits were used as arguments for the appeal against the negative decision passed by the political screening committee. In the second part of the treatise I publish the memoirs of Kálmán Kesserü's widow about her husband, relating to the events of World War II and the following period. Since he appealed against the decision of the political screening committee, Kálmán Kesserü was prosecuted. Though he was acquitted by the People's Court, he still has not been rehabilitated. At present there is neither a street in Szentendre to preserve his name nor a memorial tablet to give information about his deeds. (Translated by Beatrix Szepesi) 274
