A FORGOTTEN POET IN THE SERVICE OF THE COUNTY

PORTRAIT AND DOCUMENT LEGACY OF GYŐZŐ DALMADY

Győző Dalmady is an outstanding figure of 19th century Pest County, a poet and literary translator well-known both nationwide and abroad. He played an active role in the county’s public life. He organized the orphans’ authority of Pest County which he chaired for over three decades.

Besides his literary work, his activities as a historian are also remarkable, as he recorded contemporary events in detail and in a colorful manner. In this essay, we publish some extracts from his writings about the years 1860—1861. He wrote a contemporary account about the events from the days following the issue of the October Diploma, as well as about the process and participants of Pest County’s inaugural assembly. As one of the youth leaders, Győző Dalmady summed up his personal experience and his political opinion in his works and poems.

He was a well-known and celebrated member of the society both as a county official and as a poet, his name and poems often appeared in the local press. The memory of the once famous poet and lawyer faded by now; his name is kept by his published books, a memorial tablet on the Pest county house, as well as some public spaces and a public institution named after him.
