Pásztor Adrien–Vida Tivadar. Bizánci éremleletes sír a budakalászi avar temetőből

Adrien Pásztor—Tivadar Vida GRAVE FROM BUDAKALÁSZ WITH A BYZANTINE COIN FIND We have been excavating this findspot known for a long time since 1987 (1). 850 graves discovered up to this moment presumably take one fourth of the whole cemetery. The larger part of the excavated graves belongs to the Early and Middle Avar period, but at the southern edge of the cemetery Late Avar bronze mounts decorated with griffin-tendril designs were found also. On the 28th of July, 1989 in the completely robbed grave 759. near the north-western edge of the cemetery we found a Byzantine coin accompanied by Early Avar jewels. On the cleaned surface of the grave a brown spot showed the robbing pit, that could be traced to the bottom of the grave and hit the whole skeleton. The grave was badly disturbed indeed, so we could trace only the western end of the coffin (?) in the sandy soil. Bone fragments were thrown inside the presumable coffin-spot. The scull was on the place of the right femur, ribs and the pelvis lied in the upper third of the grave. The height of the grave was 260 cm, its width: 100 cm, depth: 180 cm. Finds: 1. Gold coin of emperors Herakleios and Herakleios Konstantinos found between the ribs. The coin is in mint condition, die was slightly slipped on the obvers and revers 2 . On the obvers there is a portrait of the emperor and his son en face. There is a cross-decorated band-crown on their head, their clothes are pinned with a disc-fibula. There is a cross in the space between the emperors and the legend. Rv.: dNN ERACLIUS ET ERACONST PP AU The obverse is decorated by a cross, under it there is an inscription BOXX. Ov.: VICTORIA AUG yz Weight: 3.75 gr, diameter: 2 cm Mint: Constantinople Dating: 616—625 Type: DOC 19e 3 МШ65 4 BMC 25 5 The coin is a so-called light, 20 carat solidus with reduced weight, minted specially for barbarians 6 . Golden coins of Herakleios dinasty which held power for 30 years, are known from a lot of Avar sports. 2. Fragment of a silver earring with decorated pulled up plate-sphere. Only a helf of the sphere preserved without any traces of decoration or soldering (diameter: 1.3 cm). 3. a) One flattered spherical small glass bead (d: 0.6 cm). b) One brown bead with plastic white decoration (d: 0.9 cm) c) One segmented black bead with plastic yellow decoration (d: 1.1 cm) 4. Brown biconical spindle-whorl made of well refined clay (h: 2.2 cm, d: 2.8 cm). 5. Gilded bronze ring with a widening head inlaid with glass and decorated with Kerbschnitt technique. Gilding is rather seedy. Width of the head: 1.1 cm, diam: 2.3 cm. The band of the ring gradually narrows, on the back at the soldering it is 0.5 cm wide. Circles carved in the centre of the head surround a glass inlay (d: 0.4 cm). Concentric circles are decorated cross-directed with a triple cogging. There are triangular colourless glass inlays to the left and to the right from it. There are parallel, inclined carved lines running from the sides of triangles to the rim of the ring. At the Vertexes of the triangles on the both sides rhomboid groove cut with Kerbschnitt technique can be seen. There is a double carving running to both rims of the ring from the Vertexes of the rhombe.
