Éva Csongrádi-Balogh TRACES OF A LATE NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT AT VERSEG-KERTEKALJA Pottery and lithic finds discovered at Verseg-Kertekalja belong to the Bird, 'not painted' phase of the Lengyel culture. General features of pottery include tempering with small pebbles and sand, brick-red yellowish brown, greyish colour, rough surface of the sherds, lack of painting and carved ornamentation which are typical for the early phase of the Lengyel culture. Further elements typical for the pottery include horizontally placed pierced handles, large protruding knots of globular and flattened form (ornament types d—e) and other types typical for the Late Lengyel period (c— d, g types). Among the small set of lithic artifacts (35 pieces) we can find steep distal retouch, truncated blade/scraper transitional forms, relative frequency of endscrapers and that of artifacts made on flakes, core remnants and core rims corroborate the Late Neolithic character of the site. Considerable number of medium- and large blades point towards the younger, Copper Age elements. Translated by K. T. Biró 120
