Lajos Jakus: THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE FAMILY OF PETÖFI'S MOTHER The author is dealing with the origin of the Hruz family, the mother-side ancestors of the world-famous Hungarian poet, Sándor Petőfi (1823—1849) on the ground of researches made in Slovakian archives. He cast new light upon the social and economic conditions of the Hruz family. They made better living than it was presumed by some of the Petőfi-biographies. The mother-side ancestors of the poet were craftsmen from the beginning of the 18th century. They moved from Kelemenfalva (County Túróc) to Mosóc, then Necpál. Here the great-grandfather of the poet was innkeeper besides his real profession (tailor), later his son, who was shoe-maker by his profession, inherited the pub. It this house Maria Hruz, Petőfi's mother was born. After 1807 the family moved to the Great Hungarian Plain. Their stations were: Pest, Maglód, Aszód, and finally Cinkota. The author is also dealing with the hard life of György Hruz, which was in connection with his niece, Maria Hruz's fate. This paper clears up the date of Maria Hruz's staying at Maglód as well. The enclosed, very detailed genealogy shows the ramification of the Hruz family. 22« 339
