Sin Edit szerk.: Szőnyi István bibliográfia (Pest Megyei Múzeumi Füzetek 2., Szentendre, 1995)
Introduction We have compiled our bibliography published on the occassion of the 100th anniversary of István Szőnyi's birth on the basis of the largest collections of documents. Our primary source was the Szőnyi-material of The Art Historian Research Group of The Hungarian Academy of Science and the documentary department of the Szőnyi István Memorial Museum of Zebegény. Complementary researches were done in the documentary department and the library of the Hungarian National Gallery and in the library of the Directorate of the Museums of Pest County, in the monitoring bureau, the collection of local history and that of fine arts of the Library of Pest County. We also used the catalogue and the bibliography of articles of the National Széchényi Library, the book titled The Bibliography Of Hungarian Art History From The 17th Century To the End Of 1954 (ed. by Béla Bíró, Budapest, 1954.), the current bibliographies of The Bibliography Of the Hungarian National Bibliographies and those of The Repertory of Hungarian Periodicals and the bibliographies published annually in the Gazette Of Art History. We have tried to explore the rich Szőnyi-material, especially what can be found in the bequest of the artist. From the material concerning the Szőnyi István Memorial Museum and the Free Art School of Zebegény we have selected what we considered importantin connection with the artist's after-life. We have omitted the classified ads which carry no important information, the auction news and the exhibition-columns. We did not deal with the drawings or reproductions published without a text in dailies and monthlies. The original version or a good-quality duplication of them can usually be found in public collections or in books of high-standard and catalogues. The primary organizing principle of our bibliography is chronological. In a given year we first described books and separated it with xxx from the periodicals. Inquiry according to genres, authors or location is helped by indexes. The identifiable pseudonyms and abbreviations are explained in the name index. The addendum to the title descriptions are given in []. The articles of identical or nearly identical reading, and mostly untitled short reports or evaluations of one exhibition, publication or event are under one registry number. The collection of the material was closed on December 31, 1994. The items having occurred after preparing the manuscript are inserted in the chronology with lettermarks without breaking the numbering, (e. g. 740 a., 740 b.) We considered it necessary to give a survey of István Szőnyi's art and career as well as his place in Hungarian art history. To draw up this concise and -11-
