A Roman cemetery at Budaörs (1 st-4th centuries AD) The cemetery of the Roman vicus lay on a hilltop some 50 meters north of the settlement. The earliest Roman Age graves were simple inhumation burials from the 1 st and 2nd centuries. The inhumation rite survived through the 3rd century until the close of the 4th century. Cremation was practiced for about a hundred years from the mid-2nd to the mid-3rd century. The two rites existed side by side in most early Roman cemeteries of Pannonia, with inhumation practiced by the native Celtic population and cremation by the Romans. Yet a third mode of burial, smaller graveyards enclosed within circular and rectangular ditches, has also been documented at Budaörs. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1. Bowl and cup with stamped decoration 2.
