A barbizoni festők képei azonban nem jelentettek igazi újdonságot számára, hiszen már 1874 előtt, Münchenben megismerte a francia festők hatása alatt dolgozó német tájfestők szemléletét. Mészöly tájképei a legteljesebb mértékben megfelelnek az intim tájkép követelményének; bár tárgyuk egy pontosan behatárolható tájrészlet, igazi témájuk a festő lelkének beleolvadása e tájba. Különösen a Balaton környékének szelíden hullámzó dombjai, az ég páratelt levegője kínált alkalmas tárgyat Mészöly festői invenciójának. Les tableaux des peintres de Barbizon ne lui semblèrent toutefois pas présenter de véritable nouveauté, puisqu'il avait déjà о découvert à Munich, avant 1874, la vision du monde des paysagistes allemands influencés par les peintres français. Les paysages de Mészöly répondent dans une très large mesure aux exigences du paysage intime; bien qu'ils aient pour objet un détail de paysage clairement délimité, leur véritable thème est le fusionnement de l'âme du peintre dans le paysage. Ce sont surtout les collines doucement ondoyantes, l'air humide du ciel des environs du Balaton qui offrent l'objet propre à l'inventivité artistique de Mészöly. Mészöly's landscapes fully conform to the requirements of intimate landscape painting. Although their subject is a clearly defined piece of scenery, their real theme is the integration of the painter's soul into the landscape. The gently rolling hills around Lake Balaton and the humid air offer an especially suitable subject for Mészöly's artistic creativity.
