Kocsis István - The painter, his altarpiece and his Stations of the Cross (Excerpts)
I look at the altarpiece and the Stations of the Cross. I do not know for how long I have been looking at them. I cannot feel time because it stopped. Time and space expand and shrink simultaneously... Yes, I loo< at the pictures and time and space shrink, and then they expand again. The first century and the twentieth century are in the same time. The people of the first and the twentieth century are in the same space. The twentieth-century people are Hungarians. .. Isthere only one mystery play? I look at the altarpiece and the Stations of the Cross. 'These pictures were painted by a pilgrim,' I peint out again, 'the pilgrim, as any other pilgrim, wanted to repent. .. I see an altarpiece and Stations of the Cross painted by a repentant. Now I understand that my fuend, László Paulovics settled in Germany two decades ago so as to return and repent, that is, to paint this altarpiece and these Stations of the Cross as a sign of repentance, in the Holy Spirit church of Szatmárnémeti, over the river Szamos.'
