the father left the family and did not take care of the children so the mother tried to earn a living from sewing and makingdolls. Jenő Remsey remembered to his mother in his pictures Anyám varr (My Mother Sewing) (1909), Szegény bábucsináló asszony (The Poor Puppet-Maker) (1913), Pythia /Szegény babacsináló asszony (Pythia / The Poor Doll-Maker) (1915). Jenő Remsey attended Markó street grammar school in Budapest. After that he worked as an officer of the Országos Betegsegélyező Pénztár (H ungarian Institute for Sickness Benefit) for four years. From 1905 to 1909 he regularly attended the friendly circle of the Szűz street atelier, where he had been taken by his actress sister, and met Lajos Gulácsy, Viktor Erdei, Lajos Fülep, and János Nagy Balogh. He started to draw as an autodidact here. Besides work he also attended Iparrajziskola (Technical School of Design). His artistic talent became visible early, he won a prize at the grammar school's drawing contest with his poster design. In his early period he drew and painted many anti-capitalist, socially driven pictures: Courriéres (1906). Az iga (The Yolk) (1905). A gyár (The Factory). A Moloch (The Moloch) (1906), A város (The City). Proletárok (Proletarians) (1906), A Tőke (The Capital) (1909). He wanted to present the 22-piece collection in the yearly exhibition of the Műcsarnok but the official state jury did not give permission. Thus on French model, with those artists whose works were also refused, they organised the Salon des Refusés exhibition - the first and last in Hungary - in the Gresham Palace. Jenő Remsey's expressive pictures with their strong social criticism drew much attention. Some of his works were bought so the painter could go to a study tour to Munich and Vienna.
