-5ARTIFACTS OF THE UPPER MENDI AREA Continued S tone Axe Native salt Ep-tog The stone used is traded in from Enga province. It is fitted to a piece of shaped wood and tied with cane. Stone axes are used in fighting, gardening and for ceremonial purposes . This salt is processed in the Kandep area. Vegetation is soaked in a salt pool and then burned. The salt is made from the ashes. The covering is pandanus (karuka)leaves . Bundles of native salt are used in bride price, in trade and to eat with food. Kina shell Momak (vyj Mo r<vi>V - W Ua-O^ Jew's harp Ladus / tombol Mouth bow Drum Pu-ol Mol-kuin / ke-kuin •M Large, regular kina shells are the most highly prized. These have a string with knots on it tied to the middle of the band to denote the number of times it has been exchanged. It is painted red and kept in a special covering. Kina shells ./of this type are used in bride price, compensation payments and to exchange with relatives. Shield shaped piece of white shell used as a chest adornment and in exchange ceremonies . String is made from a plant and then dyed black with mud and smoked in the roof of the house. It is fashioned into an armband with a split bamboo holding the string in the desired shape. It is coated in oil or pig fat. Only headmen wear this type of armband. It signifies wealth. Shaped from bamboo with a string attached to help the central lip vibrate. Wax is put at the tip. This instrument is used during the "tarnim het" ceremony and just for enjoyment. Made from the stem and root of a plant. This is played just for enjoyment rather than during ceremonies .
