SIT-IN PICTURE MOVER The picture is spinning around... Was it the predecessor of the cinema? It could have been if the history of technology had got on anothertrackin the past. Instead of using conditional, it is far better to call the work an alternative solution for people whose retina is tired of visual shock effects. It is high time to slow down, at least for those who are ready to leaf through the non-existent relevant chapters of the history of technology. There had been great concepts even before the appearance of the cinema, such as the Laterna Magica, kinetoscope, praxinoscope or mutoscope, but the present solution was not among them. It might have been too little or too much, as the device is an aerodynamic motion picture installer which sets in motion the exciting drawing by Tibor Németh. Of course, the question might arise: How can the bizarre matching of a drawing and a device be displayed at a photography exhibition? In order to answer the question, the term ’photography’ must be expanded. Using the word ’taking photographs’ instead of ’photography’ might make it clearer. Taking photographs is not only about creating a picture by immortalising a spectacle, but also about creating a photograph by examining the optical imaging itself, without considering the process of photography. Not until this fact is accepted do we have the right to display a drawing at the present exhibition. The Sit-in Picture Mover has been made suitable for this purpose by one of its parts, a huge camera, which can also be regarded as a cinema room for one person. Behind the screen, there are no secrets. Mechanism is presented in the exhibition hall, therefore it is easy to understand the operation of the device. Péter Laczkó
