The photos by Péter Deim represent the experimental branch of photography. Photo is applied by the artist as a medium of fine arts. His work entitled ’Crystallisation’ belongs to the domain of organic abstraction, whereas ’Prism Labyrinth’ is closer to geometrical abstraction. The divided, coffered structure of’Prism Labyrinth’ pictures the process of time by placing several viewpoints next to each other. The image sequences are filled with dynamism by the refraction of different angles, the direction of incident light beams and the altering proportion of dark and light surfaces. ’Crystallisation’ was made by cutting one photo into several fields. It represents a physical process, the change of consistency, therefore the photo expresses and conveys shift. Máté Barnás has compressed the static and dynamic character of time, namely the present continuous, into a photo. According to the artist, all the defined and non-defined forms of time can be found in human consciousness simultaneously. The present is interwoven by the past and the future. He wanted to find an experimental technical solution which enabled him to portray the present continuous. ’I converted an old roll film box camera into a miniature camera. As the new box camera did not divide the recording into frames, the continuous forwarding of raw material became possible, and I could record more time. The raw material was in constant motion during the approx. 2-minute exposure, and continuously exposed to light. As a result, an exposed image of 3,5 cmxlOO cm was born on the 135 mm film. After scanning, the parts were pasted together in a programme.’, explains the artist. The changing speed of perceived time, its density and spatial dimension are modelled by parallel, linear line structure, fault-lines, ascending and descending branches. Csaba Márton writes the following about his photo entitled „Stages”: ’The beauty of Einstein’s theory of relativity is given by its simplicity. One of the claims of the theory is that time slows down or, in extreme cases, it stops in a speed range that is close to the speed of light. I am part of a world in which ruthless time and apparent eternity coexist. By means of my camera I am trying to use this timeless machinery to capture some moments from our time-centred world or react to the unspeakable. I regard a photo as the game of the finite and infinite as well as reflection on the stages of human life: We have to spend our lives in the trap of these stages. All the things that are believed to be eternal change after a while. A new stage has to be covered every time we want to get closer to infinity.’ 19
