Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925
15 Trent ans d’Art Indépendant Rétrospective de 1884 á 1914 de la Socíété des artistes Indépendants, catalogue. Paris,1926. The work, already sold, is listed as No. 633 with the year 1905. small picture entitled Still-life in front of a Green Door could also be the fruit of his brief sojourn in Belgium (Plate 44). We do not know, on the basis of the data at our disposal, whether Gargons Nus (or Nude Boys) from 1905 was also painted in Paris or in Belgium.15 Indeed, we do not even possess a reproduction of this work, but we hope that it will resurface soon. Until then, we can only treat this topic in terms of his later works. His Belgium paintings clearly demonstrate that, in 1905, Czóbel had not yet strayed far from his Nagybánya roots. Still, under the influence of Paris sights, he struggled to find his way in the labyrinth of trends that were new for him. Here, precisely in Brügge, were born those truly progressive works, steeped in Post-Impressionism, which would set off a virtual palace revolution among the youths of Nagybánya the following summer. Still, in the spring of 1906, preceding the events in Nagybánya, Czóbel took several pictures painted in Brügge and Zeebrügge to Paris, where he presented them alongside the works created in the French capital at the Salon des Indépendants. He displayed altogether eight works, at least half of which can be identified, and at least three of which represented his study trip in Belgium. 42. Béla Czóbel: Boats in Zeebrügge, 1905.
