R. Stanley Johnson: Béla Czóbel

R. STANLEY JOHNSON BÉLA CZÓBEL Béla Czóbel contributed in significant ways to a number of the twentieth century’s most important art movements: Fauvism, the Hungarian Eight as well as various aspects of French and German and Dutch expressionism. Much of what he accomplished, however, has been associated with the art world of Paris, a city where he spent his winters for many years. In spite of the esteem of various major art historians, fellow artists, collectors and museums, Czóbel undeservedly has not yet received the same degree of international recognition accorded to his colleagues; Matisse, Léger, Picasso, Gromaire and others. Each of these colleagues all had great respect for Czóbel.1 CZÓBEL, A FRENCH HUNGARIAN PAINTER 9
