Tettamanti Sarolta: Régészti kuttások a váci vábren 1998-2002 között
English Summaries Sarolta Tettamanti The Archaeological Investigations in the Castle of Vac in 1998-2002 The study summarizes the results of the research fulfilled between 1998 and 2002 concerning the medieval and later - during the period of the Turkish occupation of Hungary — frontier castle of Vác. Excavations were carried out in the southern part of the inner castle area as well as on the southern, southwestern borderline of its enclosure. In front of the southern wall of the Franciscan friary late medieval wall remnants, parts of buildings and some burials of the graveyard around the medieval cathedral were uncovered. The features, the pits, and the observation of the layers resulted in finds from several historical periods as far back as the Late Copper Age. The interpretation of the archaeological context and the establishment of the correlations between the excavated objects was made more difficult by the standing building of the friary as well as the disturbance and landscaping caused by its former building process. To the southeast of this excavation area a section of the foundation and the debris of the castle wall, a row of postholes and a part of a ditch were unearthed. Our supposition that these archaeological objects on the ground plan of the castle must have been the narrowing area that was indicated on the army survey map from 1680 could be strengthened and proved only by further investigations in the direction towards the northeast corner tower. In the surrounding around the mentioned castle wall a part of a llth-12th-century linear cemetery was found together with other features from the early and late Árpádian periods as well as from the later Middle Ages. The section of the castle wall facing to the Danube, situated southeast of the cannon terrace, strengthened with a palisade during the Turkish occupation was completely excavated, similarly to the tower closing this part of the wall. Two — in a short section even three - rows of postholes survived from this, weakly built, several times demolished palisade. The tower was blown away most probably during the struggles of the liberation war (1685). The abovementioned army survey map shows the one terraced system of the palisade/ditches and the tower within the stoned wall and that corresponds to the results of our excavation. Besides presenting the finds of the palisade, a closed assemblage (between the 13th century and the first half of the 16th century) was chosen from the great quantities of finds collected on the excavation sites. Among other objects some special fragments of stove tiles (Figs. 23-27) were displayed found in the fill between the walls of a small building (object No. 2002/15) situated near the eastern corner of the Franciscan friary. 178
