SZENTENDRE AND ITS LEGENDARY PAINTERS (Summary) This volume is a specific case and source book of a lyrical kind on „the town of painters” and on the painters of the town Szentendre. Confessions of about fifty departed painters of the town on their art, their fellow painters, secrets, friendships and love, the pleasures and tortures of creation, and last but not least on the collective muse, the town of Szentendre itself. Amusing and fascinating, sometimes poignant diary notes, letters, memories, interviews lead the reader through stories and decades. The pages are enlivened by the times bringing the birth of classical Szentendre art from the mid- 1880s to the turn of the 1960/70s. Beside the painters, over thirty contemporaries - writers, poets, lovers, wives, collectors, and friends - do express their views. The purpose of the volume is to start a new approach and to shed light on the national treasure collected by Szentendre painting in the twentieth century. Szentendre stands for something in the national and European art scene, what is for a long time more than local value, curiosity, or an interior art case. There is still much to be done to present all this for the public. As a result of the authenticity of this volume, its personal tone, demanding and entertaining style, rich context of local and art history it is both a literary work and a case book, a source of cultural and art history.
