FOREWORD The role of the town of Szentendre is obvious in the development of 20th century modern Hungarian art. The movement of artistic renewal based not only on the visual reform, but on invisible truth and reality was started in the 1930s. The purpose was to regain the magic force of art. Several female artists took part in this process. Modernism brought about the rejection of academism, the structure which allowed only a narrow path for female ambition. In Hungary in the 1920s female artists had the same education that men had formerly at the Academy. Female artists could however build a career against all the difficulties. Some of them came to Szentendre, often with their artist husbands. Step by step their personal art gave them the right of an independent artist in the modernist canon ruled by men. Ferenczy Museum, preserving their beguest, has the duty of commemoration. The reason of organizing this exhibition is the 100th anniversary of three major female artists: Margit Anna (1913-1991), Piroska Szántó (1913-1998) and Júlia Vajda (1913-1982). Their display is accompanied by the works of artists with similar views: Mária Modok and Erzsébet Vaszkó. All five of them has brought special values to Hungarian art scene. The exhibition of ArtMill and its catalogue is an hommage to the outstanding female artists of modern Hungarian art.
