Herpai András: Térszemléletek

The aim of the essay is to examine the factors which led to the evolution of abstract art after World War II. Besides its political and economic expansion, America has played an increasingly important role in art, as well. Although the traditions of abstract art date back before 1945, artistic means of expression and approach have radically changed since then. Heidegger’s essay entitled ’Art and space’ reflects the change that has occurred in the relationship between space and man as well as space and art. Instead of representing void, space has appeared as a dominant part, as a former of composition in sculpture, painting and graphic arts. Shrinking of the world and Western society’s demand for change have brought about closer ties with the East. Zen’s creative, non-analytic but experiencing approach striving for wholeness as well as Chinese tintdrawing providing straighter expression and freedom have directly or indirectly inspired many Western-European artists. The unique graphics and reproductions displayed at the exhibition fall into three main categories: In the first category, works deal with the problems of emptiness and fullness based on the relation between blank paper and drawing-colour-shape (Alechinsky). The second category includes works illustrating plane space (Täpies) and space depth (Sam Francis). The final group consists of graphics with spiritual content (Miró). All three factors have been strongly influenced by the direct or indirect effect of Eastern cultures. 33 V
