VI. TRADÍCIÓ ÉS KULTÚRA - 12. Rezümék

At the end of 1950' s the building up of still unbuilt areas went on and that was the proper sign of urbanisation. The third, and most intensive period of re-building of the town started in I960' s and this reconstruction has not been finished yet. Unfortunately, as a result of this process, the whole old city centre was demolished. In 1968 Salgótarján - for the first time in Hungary - got the prize „János Hild" of urbanisation for the successful reconstruction and development of the town. During the 1970's and 1980's new blocks of flats and housing estates were built relatively far from the city centre. But at the end of 1980' s with the new line of the main road No. 21 a new housing estate was established at the western part of the city centre, next to the modern county library. That is why nowadays there cannot be found any open, unbuilt areas there. After the changing of the political system in 1988 a new city council was elected and their responsibility would be to continue the bulding of new, No. 21 road and the reconstruction of the suburbs, as it is not planned to enlarge Salgótarján over 50,000 inhabitants.
