G. Toronyi Judit: Lakosok és választók a salgótarjáni városközpontban (1922)

JUDIT TORONYI G. RESIDENTS AND ELECTORS IN THE TOWN CENTRE OF SALGÓTARJÁN (1922.) In the beginning of the century, the extension of political rights was a central issue, the reform of voting rights appeared to be a crucial point in the electoral programs. During the Horthy Era, suffrage was not granted on the basis of financial situation but age, education, citizenship, and residency. Thus censuses written during this period can be used for examining certain social groups of a given settlement. In 1922, a census was made in Salgótarján which contained the adult residents of 10 streets, 735 people. This document contained the person’s name, age, place of residence, qualification, profession, and number of children. According to the data registered, 512 out of 735 people had suffrage, 199 women and 313 men. Regarding their qualifications, most of them had finished four classes of elementary school. The processing of these documents gave us the chance to create statistical records, moreover, to get to know the personality of these people by reading their answers given to the questions. According to census documents of 1922, the number of people who met the requirements of the election decree in the town centre of Salgótarján was higher than the average registration index in the country (30%). 126
