ZOLTÁN BALOGH MEMORIAL TO WORLD WAR 1914-1918- NÁNDOR HAÁZER ARTILLERY LEADER’S FRONT DIARY AND PHOTO ALBUM FROM THE RUSSIAN BATTLEFIELD Nándor Haázer’s diary is one of those war memorials that contains records of so-called simple-origin soldiers. A civilian mining worker caught a pen to capture his war experiences for himself and his family for posterity. Haázer sergeant was the fire leader of the first battery of the 16th Losonc Imperial and Royal Camp Artillery Regiment. The Artillery Regiment fought on the Eastern Front from the end of August 1914 to March 1918. Nándor Haázer recorded the events that happened to him and considered important to him in his diary from his entry (30 July 1914) to his arrival home (6 November 1915) day to day also indicating the days of the week during the First Worls War on the Russian front. Besides the description of the military events, the movement of the regiment, the life of the camp, the description of the weather conditions was very important. In our writing, based on Haázer’s diary we follow the path of the Artillery Regiment and the first battery on the Russian front from the fighting around Komarov on the resistance along San and the fighting in Northern Poland until the fights for the liberation of Przemysl and Lemberg. It is important to note that the album’s photographs were created between 1914 and 1918, while the front diary follows the events until the beginning of November 1915. Photos of the battlefield, artillery wheapons and camp life make up a significant amount of Nándor Haázer’s photo album. The rulers’ photographs recorded the front visits of Wilhelm II German Emperor and the Prince of Throne, Archduke Charles (1915) and of King Charles IV of Hungary (July 1917). 102
